Conversations in Conflict Studies: "Silence Isn't Golden: Learning to Become Active Allies in the Face of Oppression"
(Speakers)
Although most of us aspire to be active allies in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of oppression, the process is actually complex and difficult. In this presentation Mara Sapon-Shevin will share my work in working to help people of all ages to move from "bystander" to "upstander" and share some recent media campaigns that hope to shift the probability that someone will "say something". I will also link the recent focus on bullying to broader societal issues and challenges.
Sapon-Shevin is Professor of Inclusive Education in the Department of Teaching and Leadership in the School of Education. Her areas of interest and expertise center on anti-oppressive education, school reform and using the arts to teach for social justice. More information...
