Undergrads as Researchers: Your Students and Their Sources
(Speakers)

The Graduate School's Professional Development Series presents Prof. Rebecca Moore Howard (Writing and Rhetoric). Data from a 16-school study suggests that in composition classes, students tend to quote-mine their sources, reading only far enough to find a "killer quote" to paste into their research projects. This session will present the Citation Project's research findings, show some examples of how quote-mining obscures a shallow engagement with sources, and consider ways in which instructors across the disciplines might mentor students' engagement with source texts.
